Meanwhiles: Everything else that keeps running while attention is on one thing. The term works at two scales: the world’s meanwhiles, which carry on whether or not anyone is tracking them, and a person’s meanwhiles, the parallel threads someone is personally responsible for holding.
The world’s meanwhiles
Events, processes, and conditions continue in parallel whether or not any one observer is watching: an ecosystem changing, an institution’s process moving on its own clock, other people’s situations unfolding, history accumulating. A Meanwhile in this sense can be another place, an institutional process, a slowly growing backlog, an approaching deadline, a resource that becomes available or expires, a relationship changing outside the main conversation, or a future consequence of today’s workaround. None of it pauses because one person’s attention is elsewhere.
The official problem is handled on institutional time: the application pending, the appeal in process, the referral made, the back pay approved but not yet deposited. Meanwhile, the realities run on real time: rent is due, food is low, a worker did not show, the person still needs care, the caregiver still needs sleep. The gap between the two clocks is where strain tends to concentrate.
A person’s meanwhiles
The subset of the world’s meanwhiles that a specific person is actually responsible for holding: in working memory, in notes, or in what an assistant is tracking for them. This is a capacity question, not just an awareness question. Nobody can hold all of the world’s meanwhiles. What matters is which ones are this person’s to carry, whether they are written down somewhere other than memory, and what happens to the ones that are not.
A future possibility is not present coverage. An approved-but-unpaid benefit is a world’s-meanwhile until the date it is due; it becomes a person’s-meanwhile the moment someone has to plan around it not having arrived yet.
Illustrative example
Illustrative (constructed). An application is approved but not yet paid, and rent is due before the payment date. In the institution’s record, the approval is progress. In the household’s meanwhiles, the due date is what actually governs the next two weeks. Both are true at once; they are tracked in different places, on different clocks.
What tends to help
- Before defending solutions, open a Meanwhiles board: three to six parallel tracks that could materially change the situation, not everything in the world.
- Track each one as waiting on, blocked by, or due by.
- Decide, explicitly, which meanwhiles are this person’s to hold versus which belong to someone else or to no one in particular yet.
- Move a person’s meanwhiles out of working memory and into notes or a tracked list; working memory under load is where they get dropped.
- Treat a pending resource as a possibility until it is usable and delivered.
A proposed cycle (hypothesis, from an AI reply in a multi-AI exchange, untested): Scene, Meanwhiles, Configuration, Trial move, Receipt.

Open questions
Does the two-scale split hold up across more examples, or do some meanwhiles resist being assigned cleanly to the world or to a person (shared household meanwhiles held jointly by several people, for instance)? A composite or consented example can be added with its source, date and status.
